Freelance - Cost Manager - Data centres - Germany

Location: Germany, Germany Salary: £400 - £500 per day

Our client is a relatively new player within the European data centre sector. They are part of a parent company based in the USA and have grown rapidly through acquisition over the last few years and now operate 75 different sites across Europe. The organisation is deep in acquisition mode and are about to add a further 10-sites to their portfolio with advanced talks for others that may come to fruition over the next 12-18 months

Our client is about to embark on a series of upgrades, improvements, refurbishment and extensions to their existing sites, and they are now seeking a Cost Manager to join the team. The role will be initially to cover three sites in southern Germany: Munich, Nuremberg & Stuttgart, each of them upgrades to ‘live’ occupied data centres, primarily of the MEP systems and infrastructure. Once these projects are closed out the role will then focus forthcoming projects spread across Germany. The role can be based primarily from home, office or hybrid (whichever suits you best) but it will require some travel to sites as required.

Duties will include:
•    Develop, manage, and track project cost plans and budgets from early-stage feasibility through to final account.
•    Lead the procurement strategy and tendering process for consultants, contractors, and suppliers.
•    Evaluate contractor and supplier bids, support contract negotiations, and make recommendations for award.
•    Administer contracts (e.g. FIDIC, NEC, bespoke), ensuring compliance with agreed terms and commercial procedures.
•    Monitor and manage project costs throughout the lifecycle, identifying variances and recommending corrective actions.
•    Review and validate contractor payment applications, valuations, and change order proposals.
•    Support risk management through cost impact analysis of potential issues and risks.
•    Maintain accurate cost reporting and forecasting, including monthly cost reports and cash flow projections.
•    Liaise with internal project teams (design, construction, finance, operations) and external stakeholders.
•    Review and manage claims and variations to ensure cost control and contractual compliance.
•    Provide commercial input to value engineering and optimisation processes.
•    Ensure adherence to internal governance and reporting standards.
•    Support final account negotiation and close-out with contractors and suppliers.
•    Maintain awareness of local construction market conditions, cost trends, and supply chain dynamics in Germany.

This is NOT a rotational role - The ideal candidate will speak a good level of German and already be resident in Germany
